Mapping the Details
by

Eric Castle

Eric Castle’s formal training in landscape architecture prepared him to teach art, design, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the University of Minnesota Crookston. Communicating and recording ideas about spatial locations and relationships guides the urban and rural landscapes found in his ink and watercolor sketches. When he isn't sketching or painting, he is learning to do or make something new.

Artist statement:

“I love maps! A good map guides an adventure and reveals unknown mysteries. However, when visiting a new location, I often wander on foot or, even better, by bicycle. I will also take a sketchbook, fountain pen, and watercolors and stop in attractive locations to slow down and record my impressions. Taking the time to reflect visually in a place I want to remember helps me capture a memory, a moment, or a feeling. Quick, loose lines and broad watercolor washes combine for an expedient portrayal of spatial and emotional essentials.”
